Food of New York
Everywhere I travel I always make sure I try all the food that is recommended or I’ve heard about because I’m a foodie and always will be!
‘The only thing I like doing more than eating food, is talking about food’
So New York... my mouth is just watering thinking about all the delicious food on offer.
Here’s my top 10 things that you must try while you’re out there...
- Pizza by the slice
Pizza is on offer all around New York and a popular option is a huge slice to take away with you. Joe’s Pizza is the best and for $3 a slice how can you go wrong. They have shops all over New York so your sure to come across one. Also if you visit Little Italy then pizza is a must!
- Bagels
You can’t go to New York without trying a bagel. Sold all around the city with different fillings for you to try. My favourite is smoked salmon and cream cheese and was great as a snack while walking around or a grab and go breakfast.
- Waffles/Pancakes
Another option for breakfast if you’re looking for a more filling start to the day. Offered in most of the cafes but one of the best Waffles I had was in Ellen’s Stardust Diner near Times Square. We had to queue to get in but was worth it as little did we know we had a broadway show whilst in there. Actors who are waiting to be found to star in big shows around the city sing and act their way around while you enjoy your breakfast or lunch. Pick from a variety of toppings; my favourite is maple syrup and fruit.
Also if you go to Bryant Park in the middle of the city then they have a food van offering waffles and pancakes with your favourite toppings to sit and eat in the park.
- Magnolia Bakery
The most delicious cakes with lots of flavours and varieties to choose from. The best cupcake I have ever had! There are a few around the city but the main shop is set in Greenwich which was the very first one built in 1996.
- Pretzels
Offered on many food carts in parks and on the streets. You can have a plain one or one that is filled. I had a cheese filled pretzel and it didn’t disappoint. Try to have one earlier on in the day when their fresh as they can dry out by the evening.
- Doughnuts
Who doesn’t love a doughnut!!! They are sold on every street in cafes or shops. Lots of flavours, fillings and colours to choose from. A doughnut never disappoints.
- Hot Dogs
So many people told me I had to have a hot dog from a food stall on the street and they weren’t wrong. They are full of flavour and a selection of toppings meant you could have exactly what you fancied. My other half loved the Chilli Dogs!!
- Shake Shack
Burgers, hotdogs and milkshakes, what is there not to love. No wonder these places get busy!!! You can even have cheese sauce on your chips. You definitely have to undo your buttons on your jeans after this one.
- New York Cheesecake
I mean the real one... you won’t be able to get enough! This cheese cake has a sponge bottom and creamy centre. The outside of the cake is brown from where the cheesecake has been baked in the oven. This traditional cheesecake is served plain or with fruit.
- Pastrami
A sandwich jam packed with beef, mustard and Swiss cheese. Katz’s delicatessen is a kosher style restaurant and offers the best Pastrami sandwich in New York. They still hand cut the meat here to your liking and smoke the meat so it’s super juicy.
New York has so much to offer and the food just makes it extra special!
You won’t be disappointed!
...Two restaurants I recommend you trying are:
Bryant Park Grill which is set at the top of the park. The building is lovely and is covered in thick greenery. The food was great here and we had fantastic service all evening.
If your looking for fine dining then try The View which is a rotating restaurant at the top of the Marriott Marquis with a view of Times Square. You must book prior to your arrival at the reception area of the hotel. The food was delicious and the views of the city lit up were spectacular.
You won’t be disappointed with a visit to New York and all its great food... don’t forget to walk the city instead of public transport, then you haven’t got to worry about those extra pounds being gained!!
