Food in Dominican Republic

‘People who love to eat are the best kind of people’

Another blog about food... yes please!

Dominican Republic is known and loved for their culinary delights!
Here’s my top 10 things not to miss out on!!

  1. Fresh Fruit
The fruit out in Dominican Republic is so juicy and delicious. Fresh from the trees and cut in front of you, what more do you want!! So many different things to try as well as the ones we know already.
One unusual fruit you must try is Limoncillo or also know as Guenepa which are round, green and have skin that cracks easily for you to eat the fruit inside, bit like a lychee but a pinky yellow colour. Also try Papaya which is like melon but goes off quickly so needs to be eaten quickly when ripe. Lastly try sea grapes, everyone has their own opinion but they look like grapes and are found growing on most beaches. Refreshing but quite seedy.
Don’t forget to have the refreshing coconut, mangos, passion fruit, bananas, pineapples and oranges that we all know and love. Sold on beaches, markets, streets or put out for breakfast in hotels. Much fresher than fruit at home!!

  1. Sancocho
A traditional soup/stew sold in Dominican Republic. Made up of either beef or pork with vegetables and served with rice. Very tasty!!!

  1. Plantains
Fried or mashed but both delicious. Mashed plantains are known as Mangú and are served as breakfast in Dominican Republic with salami, eggs, fried onions and queso Frito (a white fried cheese) sounds weird but is lovely.
Fried plantains are served as a side dish with your food.
You won’t regret trying!

  1. Rum
I know this isn’t a food but Dominican Republic is known for its Rum.
The drink of Dominican Republic is Mamajuana which is Rum with red wine and honey. It has bark, twigs and herbs inside the bottle to enhance the flavours.
Some people love it and some people hate it, bit like marmite.

  1. Empanadas
These beautiful pastries are fried or baked and filled with meat or cheese. Definitely one to try!!!

  1. Stewed Beans
Also known as Habichuelas Guisadas, these beans are served with rice or meat. Found everywhere in the Dominican Republic and mainly eaten for lunch, all taste slightly different because of the herbs used in different parts of the country.

  1. Mahi Mahi
This is a fish found in the Dominican Republic, also known as the dolphin fish.  A beautiful bright coloured fish that tastes just like cod. Not at all fishy or oily, tastes really good trust me!

  1. Bandera
This traditional food of Dominican Republic represents the flag with its colours. Made up of white rice, red beans and stewed meat and eaten at lunch time.
Delicious and served all around the country.

  1. Coconut sweets
Dominican Republic is known for its coconut and most of the desserts in Dominican Republic contain coconut. The cakes, flans and macaroons are to die for! Also don’t miss out on the coconut candy if the’re selling it in the market places.
Normally dessert is served with coffee and definitely worth leaving room for.
Tip - don’t eat too much coconut or you will need a toilet near!!

  1. Habichuelas con dulce
If you think beans can’t be a dessert then you haven’t tried this dessert. A rich sweet cream with slow cooked beans, sweet potatoes, honey and sugar. Sounds odd... I know but wait till you try it!

Definitely recommend you giving the food a go out here, some of it sounds very strange or sounds like it’s been made up but trust me until you try it you won’t believe me how delicious it is!

Get exploring and try something new...you might surprise yourself!
